Chill out spots to read

For such a large city, Amsterdam has some nice little nooks to chill out in, with a cup of tea and a book. There are of course plenty of spots to enjoy when the weather if fair, but knowing Amsterdam, its good to have a few indoor options ready as well...

Amsterdam Canals

If you have been to Amsterdam, its the first obvious chill out spot! There are literally hundreds of great benches with beautiful views of the Amsterdam canals. There is a chance that some of the best ones may be taken on a sunny day, so get there early. For example, try For some great views and boat watching, try the Grachtengordel [The Amsterdam Canal District]: Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsensgracht. This area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in August 2010. Chill in one of the many gezellige cafes in the area, or grab a coffee to go.

Hortus Botanicus

De Hortus Botanicus is the one of the oldest botanical gerdens in the world and boasts more than 1000 species of exotic plants, kept nice and warm in a greenhouse. Ahhhh, how relaxing to kick back with a book here. Enjoy a sunny day in the beautiful garden, or chill in the greenhouse, surrounded by exotic plants. Entrance costs €8.50 per person; Hortus Botanicus is open daily 10-17.

Openbaar Bibliotheek Amsterdam [Amsterdam Public Library] 

One of Amsterdam's newest architectural prides featuring a rooftop cafe with stunning views of the city. They also have a book or two;) Fun for kids and adults, its a great place to hang out when the weather is not so perfect. Entrance is free. Open 10-22.

Vondelpark Rosarium [Vondelpark Rosegarden]

You can find this beautiful rosegarden in the middle of the Vondelpark, with easiest access from the Overtoom. This area features large areas of roses and tulips and its just gorgeous when they are all in bloom. On a sunny day, you can chill in the grass, together with a few hundred other people no doubt! Nemo Science Centre

This is the ship-like looking building overlooking the IJ-Tunnel. Experiencing the view from the rooftop of NEMO is one of the great treats of Amsterdam. Every summer NEMO transforms its rooftop into a beach with real sand. The views are fantastic! Its a perfect spot to enjoy a good read. Visit NEMO to learn more.
