The War on Us: The Drug War vs Cannabis Freedom

Daryl Gates, the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department from 1978 to 1992 stated before a Senate Judiciary Committee in 1990 that casual drug users "ought to be taken out and shot" because "we're in a war" and even casual drug use is "treason". The war on drugs isn't a metaphor, its a real war; and wars have victims.

"The treasury department intends to pursue a relentless warfare against the despicable dope peddling vulture who preys on the weakness of his fellow man."

- Harry J Anslinger

Imagine the scene, its 6am, you hear a bang - instinct probably tells you that burglars are in your house; and you're not far off. Your door is smashed off its hinges and armed men storm into your house, guns raised, flashlights striping through the darkness. The find your garden, the take it, they take everything.

The war on cannabis(or more generally the war on drugs) isn't a war on plants; its a war on people. A war on your brothers, sisters, friends, co-workers and community, ultimately a war on freedom of choice itself. Of course all drugs aren't considered the same, with many smokers and drinkers somehow not understanding the ludacrisy of their "I don't do drugs" stance.

Thankfully humanity is slowly moving to a position where these things will be distant memories. As cannabis legalization spreads throughout the USA and the rest of the world many people will not have to face this, however there are many people sitting in jail cells for non-violent drug charges.

If you support the war on drugs in its present form, then you're only paying lip-service to the defense of freedom, and you don't really grasp the concept of the sovereign individual human being."
